The Ultimate Guide To Spot Fake Chinese Wholesalers

2 comments

Posted on 26th April 2010 by in Alibaba

As a wholesaler from China, I have many chances to see all sorts of scams from handbags to electronics. They are exposed by angry victims in business forums, blogs and even websites dedicated to Chinese scams. Reading them surely doesnt feel good, not to say a lot of content sways from the wholesale topics to a pure hatred to the Chinese.

Scammers are obnoxious, but they are just a fraction compared to the legitimate ones. Their existence wont dent the overall confidence of wholesaling from China. And more importantly, they are easier to spot and get rid of than you think, with this guide.

Check Reviews & Exclude Proven Scammers

What does your wholesaler look in the eyes of other buyers? Sometimes one thing that has happened to your wholesaler is enough to rule it out forever. You just need to take several minutes to find if your supplier has any priors.
The tip is to make a search on Google with the wholesalers business name, domain name, email address (prefix especially), telephone or cell phone number and other uniquely identifiable information. The aim is to see if your wholesaler has appeared or involved in any complaints, scam lists, and other negative conditions.

It should be mentioned that a legitimate company isnt equal to that it should be of zero complaints. You need to make an analysis about each of your suppliers cases, to make sure whether its of scam nature or just due to an unsatisfactory product or service, though wholesalers of the latter case are often not comfortable to work with too.

You are lucky if your wholesaler has been proven in a scamming activity. But most times no such confirmation is available. On the one hand, new wholesalers emerge like mushrooms these days, too rapidly to get reviewed; on the other hand, bogus websites are created faster than they die out. A latest listed scammer you have discovered is often out of date. So it rarely happens a wholesaler you are talking with has already been listed. In fact, you may be shocked to know a fake company could set up hundreds of websites in order to maximize their victims.

Checking reviews wont help you decide right away which wholesalers you should buy from, as it calls for further evaluation to choose your business partner, but it gives you clues which wholesalers you should dismiss.

Examine Wholesale Websites

Check the following indicators of your wholesalers website. When isolated, they may not mean anything. When coming together, however, they should ring some alarm bells.

1) Is it an independent site or hosted on another website?

If the wholesaler is hosted on another site, like free space, and B2B portals such as alibaba.com, try to track down its own website. If you cant find the wholesalers own web presence, leave it.

Many would trust wholesalers or suppliers on B2B portals and take it for granted all suppliers on these portals are trustworthy simply because these portals are real. Not like that. B2B portals are the most abused web resources by bad guys, especially the second-tier B2B portals, which have almost become the hunting grounds for scammers. Dont trust recommended companies or products on those sites too. The status of these listings is bought with money, not earned with their quality.

Whenever you get a wholesaler on a third party, never stay there or try to send an inquiry. Instead, you should try to find the wholesalers own website. If you cant track it down, drop it. Dont waste your time. You have to make your purchase 100% secure.

2) Look at the Website Name

Cheaters look like cheaters. Though the name of a website doesnt decide the nature of the company, theres something in the domain name.

Several types of domain names should call your special attention:
1) domain names that contain numbers;
2) domain names that are meaningless;
3) domain names that sound too big or sound like hype; and
4) domain names that pretend to be official.

The following domain names are from a scammers list:
1st-phones.com
16988.cn
adidas-nike.net
3seal.biz
5y8l.com
bag-trading.com
super-electronics.com.cn
shopping-kingdom.com.cn

As you can see, these domain names are either carelessly selected or created to drive traffic to certain keywords. They look like scammers, dont they? Next time you see website names like these, be very cautious.

3) Does the wholesale website have a Chinese version?

When a Chinese version is missing, that means the website is targeting only overseas buyers. But usually a wholesale business wants to make their website also accessible to home suppliers, distributors and manufacturers.

After all it needs continuous Inflow of new and better products to grow bigger.
In China, the pressure on the suppliers side is often more than that on the wholesalers side, as therere too many suppliers. Most suppliers would like to provide free catalogs to online wholesalers. That has made the usual practice become that a supplier reaches out for a wholesaler for audition and inclusion of product lines. That means unless for uncommon products, its needless for a wholesaler to seek suppliers. The best and normal way for a wholesaler to obtain new products then has been a webpage often titled looking for suppliers being posted across the website. That explains why a wholesale site having a section especially for suppliers is usually genuine.

More than a language version, a Chinese section implies a complete supply chain behind the business. Some scam artists do include a Chinese-language version, however, though most tend to neglect that.

4) Are their offers too good to be true?

A genuine iPhone on sale for a little more than $200? No, dont buy it, no matter what.

Two things all buyers should be very allergic to: genuine branded items and unbeatable prices (deep discounts). The truth is only replicas are on sale on wholesale websites, as branded products often have their own distribution networks and are not allowed on wholesale sites, and very cheap products often land buyers with sleazy products or scams.

The point is you should always discard wholesalers that claim their branded products are real. As for unusually low prices, they are not impossible. But its often tricky and highly risky and believing that is why so many buyers wind up being cheated. Some buyers are obsessed in discounts. Generally, many products being sold at discounted prices on wholesale websites are actually lower in quality. Reselling substandard goods is not a good business in the long run.

Use your common sense. No greediness.

5) Do they copy content from other websites?

Its okay if its product information, as its common many wholesalers share a same supplier, just like on eBay many shop owners would sell a same item.
What you need to check are sections like About Us. Copy a neutral sentence and paste it in Google search box without quoting them with quotation marks. If it returns results from other websites, the wholesaler is questionable.

Check those websites and its easy to judge whether the wholesale site you are investigating is nothing but a rip-off.

By checking content, you get a better understanding of how the wholesaler runs their business at the user-end. A legitimate wholesaler often puts user experience at a position of high priority. They will make their best efforts to create copywriting that shows their features different from their competitors.

Anyway, how much you could depend on a wholesaler who even doesnt care to say things about themselves?

Besides content, you should also check the design and layout of the wholesalers homepage. Ripping off is not only limited to words.

Just keep in mind that scammers dont have time to take care of copywriting, web design and other time-consuming web elements. They are a small team, and the life cycles of their websites are extremely short. They have to use over reproduction, that is, many fake websites, to target victims.

6) Do they put Adsense and other ads?

Some wholesalers do put different types of ads on their websites. But most wholesalers wont. The advantage is these ads generate additional profits if the website traffic is good. The disadvantage is obvious advertising distracts the attention of buyers and blurs the nature of websites.

What you should take notice of is whether the ads are created merely for the purpose of earning clicking money. Therere some indicators: a) too many ads across the website; 2) they interfere with the normal clicking of non-ad links; c) they are in the disguise of normal links and when you click them irrelevant content pops up.

These websites dont sell stuff. Their main job is to attract ad clickers. Their part-time is to rob your money. After a period of time, you may find some of the domains are on sale.

7) Does all the information match?

Its hard for scammers to keep all the information coherent as long as its fabricated. Tinny mismatches can be exposed here and there to sharp eyes. Once you have discovered two things that are mismatched, you may safely remove the wholesaler from your list. Business should be based on honesty, right?

Anytime the following elements should match each other:
* Town
* City
* Province
* Postal Code
* Telephone Area Code
* Cell Phone Number Location
* WHOIS Domain Information
* Year Established
* Website Copyright Assertion

For example, if you have looked up the registration information, which says the wholesalers domain was registered in 2008. Then you go to the About page, which says the company was established in 2002. By comparison, you should not consider doing business with the company.

Sometimes, you may need to go to the advanced by comparing information on the wholesalers own website and information on third parties, like on B2B portals.

WHOIS database is a great tool to use. Scammers may fake address, owner name, and year of establishment, but they cant hide the truth in registration information.

Payment Options

Your money is always safe before its paid. Thats to say, its never too late before you pay, no matter how you trust your wholesale supplier by mistake.

Check the payment options on the website. If Paypal is not provided, dismiss the supplier. If Paypal is provided but when you start to pay they say they only accept wire transfer, leave it. If you are not dealing with wholesalers you are familiar with, do not pay by Western Union, Money Gram, Money Order, Bank Transfer or Credit Card.

The payment methods above are only for people you are familiar with. The following is taken from Western Unions own website:

The Western Union Money Transfer service is a great way to send money to people you know and trust. If you need to send money to someone you don’t know well, you may be putting yourself at risk for fraud.

Because we care about consumers, Western Union urges you to protect yourself from fraud by considering the following:

Never send money to a stranger using a money transfer service. Beware of deals or opportunities that seem too good to be true. Don’t use money transfer services to pay for things like online auction purchases. Never send money to pay for taxes or fees on foreign lottery winnings.

Useful Practices

* Make a telephone call to your wholesaler and check if their contact is real.
* Ask in a forum and see how experienced buyers think about your wholesaler.
* Try a sample before a large volume order.

Some Rules of Thumbs

The following points are collected from seasoned buyers. They are not made to be arbitrary, but whenever you are in any of the conditions, you should execute caution.

1) Its better not to trust wholesalers that sell almost anything.
2) Wholesalers from Fujian China are most complained as scammers.
3) Legitimate wholesalers normally dont work at unsociable hours in China.
4) Dont trust websites that contain a lot of grammatical errors.
5) Tracking code can be fabricated.
6) Dont trust a wholesaler just because its website looks elaborate.

Buy Wholesale In Latin America

1 comment

Posted on 25th April 2010 by in Alibaba

There are 4 different ways to buy wholesale in Latin America and the Caribbean:

*Buy directly from suppliers located in Asia, Europe, USA etc.

*Order from local distributors or agents representing international companies

*Purchase from manufacturers in Latin America and the Caribbean

*Search for wholesalers online thanks to B2B Trade portals and marketplaces.

1- Purchase directly from foreign manufacturers located outside the region

The product offer from foreign companies is very diverse allowing buyers to choose from a very large variety of products from famous world brands to cheap low quality products. This option forces a larger initial investment as large quantities are required for each order. This option is not feasible for small and medium companies looking to purchase small quantities. Knowledge about international trade is also required in case problems arise. Topics such as commercial terms, logistics and customs procedure should be thoroughly understood.

2- Order from local distributors or agents representing international companies

The majority of companies located in Latin America and the Caribbean will fill their sourcing needs by buying from local distributors, wholesalers and agents representing foreign brands and manufacturers. This option allows them to buy smaller quantities and remove all responsibilities related to shipping and customs procedures. These wholesalers are usually found in tax free zones such as the “Zona Libre de Colon” in Panama or the “Zona Franca de Iquique (Zofri)” in Chile. Almost every country in Latin America and the Caribbean has its own tax free zone to boost trade in their economies. These geographic regions have become strategic trading platforms in the region.

3- Purchase from manufacturers in Latin America and the Caribbean

Another option to decrease logistic costs is to buy from manufacturers and suppliers located in the region. There are a lot of benefits to this option such as better communication as the same language is used, shorter distance to travel to meet potential suppliers, cost effective prices as no middleman is adding his share and easier control of product quality. This also reduces cost related to custom duties.

4- Find wholesalers online thanks to online B2B marketplaces in Latin America and the Caribbean

Thanks to the internet, there has been an increase in online trade portals and marketplaces. The leaders are big names such as Alibaba, Tradekey, EC21 etc. These marketplaces are very strong on an international level but lack presence of Latin American and Caribbean companies. Why? This region is developing and is learning about the tools available to them and is starting to understand the importance of having an online presence for their company. The increase in entrepreneurship in the internet business within the region is also booming. Latin America and the Caribbean just created its first trade portal and marketplace www.mercatrade.com that is holding up to the international standards of design and programming and has adapted itself to the needs of the region.

Find Trade Leads In Latin America And The Caribbean

Posted on 25th April 2010 by in Alibaba

Companies around the world most probably share one thing in common: they do not have distribution channels in Latin America and the Caribbean. This is a golden opportunity as the region represents 42 countries and 609 million potential customers.

The obstacles for doing business:

*Language barriers: Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the most diverse regions in the world. Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, French, Creole and many more languages are spoken.

*Lack of online information: Ever tried to find online information about doing business in Latin America? You probably had the same frustration as a lot of business people looking to invest in this region. The information is either in Spanish, the websites are old, not updated with the latest information and not user friendly .

*Hard to find Trade leads from companies. Trade Leads are basically buying and selling offers. These offers are usually published online on B2B Trade Portals in order to help connect buyers and sellers from all over the world. The Asians are the leaders of B2B Trade portals with successful websites such as Alibaba, Tradekey, EC21 etc.

How to start doing business with Latin America and the Caribbean?

Finally, I found a serious, well designed and easy to use B2B Trade Portal for Latin America and the Caribbean. MercaTrade.com started back in 2009 and already has over one thousand trade leads.

Several things I like about this website:

*MercaTrade.com is available in both English and Spanish.

*The website is simply designed and easy to navigate. It does not have advertising flashing everywhere which I hate in other websites.

*The prices are quite reasonable as well. With their PowerTrader virtual showroom, users can enter unlimited selling and buying offers with pictures, display up to date company news, communicate Tradeshow attendance and much more. The price is $500.00USD/year which is quite good as I would pay at least five times that on other B2B Trade Portals.

*If you don’t have a money to spend right now, you can still post your offers for FREE. You have some limitations of course but this is a great start.

*Good news. They are adding several more features in 2010 at no additional cost to current premium members.

*A wealth of business resources such as etiquette, trade information about each country, trade agreements etc.

*There are other services like translation which is always useful when entering new markets.

B2b Marketplace

Posted on 24th April 2010 by in Alibaba

What does B2B signify?

B2B is the term used for Business to Business transactions between manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. This term is used for both products and services.

What is a B2B marketplace?

It is a business to business trade portal that allows manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors to promote their products and services to new international markets. Very useful resources, guides and tips are sometimes available as well.

These online portals allow companies to display what they have to sell by posting selling leads or offers. They can also to give some information about their company. Basically, a B2B marketplace facilitates the interactions and communication between buyers and sellers contributing to the dynamic and efficient trade between countries.

Types of B2B marketplaces

You will have more global (targeting world trade in general) and regional marketplaces (by country or by region such as Asia, Europe, USA, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean).

Global B2Bmarketplaces

The Asians are clearly the leader in this area with websites such as Alibaba.com and Tradekey.com. They started by targeting Chinese companies and have expanded to worldwide trade. They are important players as China is growing their importance on the international scene by becoming a world superpower. No matter where you live, you will always find an abundant supply of Chinese products.

Latin American and Caribbean B2B marketplaces

Marketplaces are starting to play an important in developing regions as the internet connection is increasing at a rapid pace and companies are relying more on marketplaces to promote themselves. The leader in this region is a fairly new site that launched back in 2009 called www.mercatrade.com. They have targeted a region that represents 42 countries and a population of 600 million. What is great about this site is that you see features that are not necessarily seen in other marketplaces such as being able to search green, organic and fair trade products. You also have a dedicated search engine for tax free zones which are important trading platforms in the region.

Wholesale Latin America And The Caribbean

Posted on 24th April 2010 by in Alibaba

Basically there are four ways to find wholesale merchandise in the region:

*Buy directly from international companies located outside the region

*Purchase from local distributors representing different foreign companies

*Order from Latin American and Caribbean manufacturers

*Find wholesalers online thanks to online B2B marketplaces

1- Buy directly from suppliers located in Asia, Europe and USA

The international products offer that is available outside of Latin America and the Caribbean is very big and allows buyers to select from a wide variety of merchandise from famous brands to inexpensive items. However this solution forces buyers to purchase large quantities if they want the commercial operation to be cost-effective therefore requiring large amount of investment which becomes difficult for small and medium size companies. Another issue that may arise is that the buyer needs to fully understand the way international trading works. In particular it’s important to be comfortable with matters such as International commercial terms, payments methods, shipping and customs procedures.

2- Purchase from local distributors or agent representing different foreign companies

3-Order from Latin American and Caribbean manufacturers.

Another way to lower shipping fees is to buy from local manufacturers. Not only has this solution allowed the buyer to know the exact identity of the manufacturer, consequently adding a better management of the quality of the production; but it also allows to get cost-effective prices since there is no intermediary adding margin in the process. In the case where the buyer purchases wholesale products in its own country, that also reduces the costs related to customs duty.

4- Browse wholesalers on B2B marketplaces and business portals

The region is seeing a drastic increase in internet use in the past years. Business people are starting to use business portals and marketplaces to find potential manufacturers and suppliers. Asian websites are the leader with names such as Alibaba, Tradekey, EC21 etc. These marketplaces have an important status on an international level yet lack visibility in Latin America and the Caribbean. Thankfully, there is a new marketplace dedicated to Latin America and the Caribbean called www.mercatrade.com. Its design is simple, easy navigability, security and adapts to the needs of the region.

Alibaba Scam – Worst B2b Network Ever

0 comments

Posted on 24th April 2010 by in Alibaba

Alibaba is a B2B network where people from all over the world can buy and sell all kinds of merchandise. Have you heard of them? However, the idea does sound pretty good in theory, but there are all kinds of holes in this popular B2B network. I am going to expose how people are getting ripped off daily from scams on Alibaba.

Many people have had really bad experiences on the network. I have personally talked to a lot of different people that will never use their network ever again in their life. I am with them and will never again use this horrible network.

First and foremost, I do not buy or sell anything from Alibaba because they nearly collapsed my business and did nothing at all to justify anything that goes on, on their network. I got a couple emails from a guy named ‘lemon’ (who is one of their moderators), but that is about it. I have been through so much over the last six months and do not want anyone to ever have to go through what I went through. Their B2B network set me back 10,000 dollars and I will never ever see that money again.

So here is how people are getting ripped of on Alibaba business-to-business network. Con-artist are signing up for ‘gold passes’ which are just a pass any average joe can get. Alibaba tells you they do not give them out to just anyone, but I suspect otherwise. You just pay them their 500 dollars and bang you are approved, and now can rip off whoever you want. I know what you are thinking, who is going to pay 500 to rip people off right? Well when you can make 200,000 quickly it is a good trade off.

People or businesses will go on their network and buy all kinds of items in bulk. Usually you can get them from wholesalers for cheap. They either provide you with a list or show you their phony website. Get this they will only accept Western Union. Why because their Paypal account is frozen (yeah right.). They will basically send you the wrong item with a wrong packing list or just provide you with a fake tracking number. After about 3-4 months they shut all there stuff down and rinse and repeat the process.

Something needs to be done about these scam online. I am so tired of getting stories from people that have been ripped off by these crafty con-artist.

The same as per United Nations Statistics Division, “wholesale ” is the resale (sale without changing) of original and used items to retail merchants, to industrialized, commercial , institutions or professional person users, or to another dealers, or involves acting as an agent or broker in buying merchandise for, or trading merchandise to, such persons or organization . Wholesale commonly physically gather , sort out and rank items in large numbers and so they part volume, repacking the product and redistribute it in tiny lots . In the earlier days, traders were closer to the markets they traded than the main they got the items from but now the scenario has modified . However , with the invention of the net and E-procure there is an increase in the count of dealers based closer producing themes and numerous of them offer drop delivering servings to firms and people.
